Updated 2 November 2026

Man running on a coastal track in New Zealand

In New Zealand, peptides fall into three groups. Cosmetic peptides in skincare and collagen peptides in food supplements are sold openly. Injectable peptides are different: many are prescription medicines, and Medsafe says selling them without authorisation is unlawful. The word is the same, but the rules are not.

Which kind of peptide are you looking for?

Start here, because each group has its own rules and its own place to buy.

Type Examples How used NZ access
Skincare Copper tripeptide-1, acetyl hexapeptide-8 On skin Normal retail
Food supplement Collagen peptides Eaten Normal retail
Approved medicines Semaglutide, tirzepatide Prescribed Doctor and pharmacy
Unapproved peptides BPC-157, TB-500, retatrutide Injected Not legal to sell to the public

What do peptides do for skin?

In skincare, peptides are used to support the look of firmer, smoother skin. Evidence varies by ingredient, as our skincare guide explains. The most searched ingredients are copper peptides and PDRN, which is a DNA ingredient often sold beside peptides.

How can you check a product?

Read the ingredient list, not the marketing. Our free peptide ingredient checker finds peptides in any list you paste and shows where they sit.
