Collagen peptides are food supplements you swallow, made from broken-down collagen. Skincare peptides are specific ingredients you apply. They are not interchangeable. Reviews of collagen supplements report modest skin hydration results, while skincare peptides are chosen for the look of skin where you apply them.

How do they compare?

Form Powder or capsule Serum or cream

What does research say about collagen supplements?

The research is reasonably active. A review of 26 trials and 1,721 people found improved skin hydration and elasticity, while noting that results varied and larger trials are needed.

A newer meta-analysis says hydration and barrier function improve most reliably, with elasticity benefits appearing mainly at 12 weeks. One trial found the gains faded after people stopped taking it.

What does research say about skincare peptides?

There is less of it, and results depend on the ingredient. Our skincare guide sets out the best-known studies, and a 2026 review of oral and topical peptides found results varied widely between trials.

Which should you choose?

Choose by what you want to do. If you want a daily food supplement, collagen peptides are the usual choice. If you want one simple addition to your routine, a peptide serum is applied directly to your face.

Many people who train already use protein or collagen. A short post-gym skincare routine is an easy step to add.

Common questions

Can I use collagen peptides and a peptide serum together?

Yes. One is a food supplement and the other is applied to skin, so they do not compete. Check with your doctor before starting supplements if you are pregnant, take medication or have a health condition.

Does collagen cream work like collagen powder?

No. Collagen in a cream is a large molecule that mainly sits on the surface as a moisturising ingredient. Collagen powder is digested like food, so the two are used in very different ways.
